Is it even possible to have a crawfish boil in Memphis without good music? We didn’t want to risk it. That’s why we booked @bentonparkermusic to set the vibes!

We believe jobs change lives. We also believe English is a direct path to earning life changing employment. Fortunately, the jobs are there. With the growth of offshoring and the gig economy, the demand for English proficiency is high, but unfortunately the workforce supply in Guatemala is not keeping up.

A few stats:

- Guatemala ranks 58 out of 116 countries globally and 13 out of 21 in Latin America in English proficiency according to the 2024 @ef English Proficiency Index

- A 2020 study done by @mckinseyco reported that 15,000 Guatemalans could be hired in two months if they were English proficient.

- That same study showed that between the years of 2017-2020, Guatemala lost over 48,000 jobs to countries such as Honduras, the DR, Colombia, Philippines, and Mexico.

- The Guatemala Association of Exporters found that only 1 in 148 scholarship program interviewees passed an English proficiency exam.

As second language learners ourselves, we know how hard the process is. But we also know that opportunity and demand exist for English speakers, and a part of our mission is to help. And good news, you can help, too!

Proceeds from our crawfish boil fundraiser in Memphis on April 27 will go toward a pilot program in which 10 students are taking part in English classes in Antigua. We just sent out our Q1 impact report to our donors and we were pumped to detail progress with 80 students in the AMIGOS program with the @eftcfoundation, 10 teachers now trained on phonics/literacy best practices, and 10 students in a pilot English program with @maximoabroad. PLUS our crawfish boil fundraiser here in Memphis at @mindbodyhaus on April 27 (tickets in our bio)

Springtime is here, and we’re boilin’ in the Bluff City! Join us on Sunday, April 27 from 2-4 pm as we boil up some support for Project Apoyo right in the heart of Midtown Memphis! Mark your calendars and snag your tickets in our bio link.

Hosted by @mindbodyhaus this fundraising event will be fun for the entire family.

• Arts/Crafts activities for kids

• PLUS, a community yoga class for the first 25 people to sign up.

All proceeds will go directly toward scholarships for students to learn English at a top-rated language institution. Just $41 a month provides everything a student needs to take courses and receive their language certification so the price of one adult ticket more than covers a month of expenses!

In 2022, teachers at La Escuela Chicamen were given a professional development using recent research showing how students most effectively learn phonics. 3 years later, teachers have trained other teachers and, the results are incredibly exciting. The school staff continues to grow and support one another using the materials they were provided and the concepts they were taught. We track the success of the program through the number of students who are learning to read, but the benefits of investing in teachers is truly immeasurable as they are now able to give a carry out a high-quality literacy program for the hundreds of students who walk through their doors throughout their professional career. The impact that Project Apoyo donors are making will be felt for many years to come.
